MLB and ESPN Part Ways Post-2025 Season Due to ‘Minimal Coverage’!

Is a Major Sports Broadcaster Ending Its Partnership Early?
After over thirty years of collaboration, MLB games may no longer be broadcast on ESPN following this year. A memo from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred obtained by The Athletic’s Evan Drellich reveals that the league and the network have decided to terminate their agreement after the 2025 season. Although originally contracted until 2028, the March 1 deadline allowed either party to opt out.
Manfred expressed dissatisfaction with the limited coverage MLB has received on ESPN platforms in recent years, aside from live game broadcasts. ESPN reportedly requested a reduction in the $550 million average rights fee, which MLB declined. Manfred anticipates exploring alternative options soon.
MLB subsequently issued a statement highlighting ESPN’s reduced baseball coverage while not ruling out a potential future collaboration. ESPN responded by emphasizing its commitment to serving MLB fans and remaining open to new ways of engagement post-2025.
The MLB-ESPN relationship dates back to 1990, featuring iconic programs like “Sunday Night Baseball” and “Baseball Tonight,” along with special events such as the Home Run Derby and playoff matches. This development is part of MLB’s evolving broadcasting landscape, influenced by shifts in television consumption and the rise of streaming services.
The league has been proactive in securing partnerships with various streaming platforms, recognizing the importance of adapting to changing viewing habits. This transition reflects the broader trend in sports broadcasting towards digital platforms and personalized viewing experiences.

ESPN and its parent company, Disney, view the streaming market as integral to the future of their business. Although both companies have their own streaming platforms, the current deal does not seem to be the ideal approach for leveraging this opportunity.
