The recent landslide that impacted Edwards’ home is just one of the potential consequences stemming from the severe fires in the Greater Los Angeles area. Farshid Vahedifard, Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Tufts University, highlighted the looming threat, emphasizing the role of vegetation in securing soil stability. When vegetation, especially plant roots, is destroyed by fires, loose soil can easily shift, setting the stage for hazardous movements downhill.
The accumulation of ash on the ground further exacerbates the situation by impeding water infiltration into the soil, leading to increased runoff. Over time, this runoff carves pathways that facilitate the sliding of dirt, debris, and even entire structures downhill. Vahedifard pointed out that the Southern California region, with its steep slopes composed of loose sediment, is particularly vulnerable to landslides and debris flows, especially when triggered by external factors like wildfires.
While landslides following wildfires are not uncommon, the accelerated timeframe seen in Edwards’ case—occurring while the Palisades Fire was ongoing—is rare. Vahedifard noted that typically, a water trigger is needed for landslides to occur post-wildfire. In this instance, the firefighters’ activities may have served as that catalyst. Looking ahead, the potential for future landslides in the burn scar areas from recent fires remains a critical concern as the rainy season approaches.
As California faces an unusually dry start to its wet season, vigilance is crucial, particularly for homes situated in burn scar zones. Preparation includes monitoring vulnerable areas, conducting geological assessments, and implementing stabilizing measures in rebuilding efforts to mitigate the risks of future wildfires and landslides.
