Millions at Stake as Falcons Owner Courts Kirk Cousins to Bench!

Despite having three years left on his four-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons, Kirk Cousins is set to earn a hefty sum in 2025 thanks to team owner Arthur Blank. Blank is obligated to pay Cousins $27.5 million for the upcoming season, even though the quarterback is expected to serve as the backup to Michael Penix Jr.

Speaking at the NFL annual meeting in Florida, Blank acknowledged the unusual situation of paying a backup QB such a substantial amount. However, he expressed confidence in Cousins’ professionalism and commitment to the team. Blank emphasized that Cousins is unlikely to cause any disruptions and will fulfill his duties as required.

Cousins, who will turn 37 in August, received a lucrative contract from the Falcons, including a hefty guarantee and a no-trade clause, when he signed with the team in 2024. Despite potential interest from other teams, it seems unlikely that any franchise would be willing to take on Cousins’ expensive deal unless faced with unforeseen circumstances.

Potential landing spots for Cousins could include the Minnesota Vikings, where he previously played, or the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are in need of a new starting quarterback. Blank remains confident in Atlanta’s decision to retain Cousins as a backup, citing the importance of having a reliable option behind Penix, who has a history of injuries.

Blank believes that investing in Cousins as a backup quarterback is a prudent move for the Falcons, considering the unpredictable nature of the NFL and the possibility of injuries to key players. Despite the financial commitment involved, Blank sees this arrangement as beneficial for the team’s long-term stability.
