Microsoft has announced its plans to invest $80 billion in fiscal 2025 for the construction of data centers tailored to handle artificial intelligence workloads. This significant commitment was revealed in a blog post on Friday. According to Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith, over half of the anticipated AI infrastructure expenditures will be allocated in the United States. The company’s fiscal year for 2025 is set to conclude in June.
Smith highlighted the United States’ current position as a frontrunner in the global AI race, attributing this success to the substantial investments made by private entities and the innovative efforts of American companies spanning from startups to established enterprises. He specifically pointed out Microsoft’s firsthand experience in this landscape, citing collaborations with entities like OpenAI, emerging firms such as Anthropic and xAI, as well as the development of internally-driven AI-enabled software platforms and applications.
Numerous leading technology firms are swiftly directing billions towards Nvidia’s graphics processing units to facilitate the training and operation of AI models. The widespread adoption of OpenAI’s ChatGPT assistant in late 2022 marked the initiation of a competitive race among companies to introduce their generative AI capabilities. Microsoft, having invested over $13 billion in OpenAI, extends cloud infrastructure support to the startup and has seamlessly integrated its models into Windows, Teams, and various other products.
In the initial quarter of fiscal 2025, Microsoft recorded $20 billion in capital expenditures and assets obtained through finance leases globally, with a substantial portion of $14.9 billion funneled into property and equipment. Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood disclosed that capital expenditures are projected to surge sequentially in the fiscal second quarter. Notably, Microsoft observed a 33% annual growth in revenue from Azure and other cloud services, with AI services accounting for a noteworthy 12% of this expansion.
Smith urged the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump to safeguard the nation’s AI leadership by emphasizing education and promoting U.S.-based AI technologies on a global scale. He raised concerns about China’s endeavors to provide subsidized access to semiconductor chips for developing nations while also pledging to establish local AI data centers. Smith underscored China’s strategic approach, recognizing that countries adopting China’s AI platform are likely to remain reliant on it in the future.
