A widespread and mysterious outage has caused disruptions to major tech services across the globe. On Saturday, numerous Microsoft 365 customers encountered issues with services such as Outlook. The company acknowledged the problem and stated that they were actively investigating the issue affecting various Microsoft 365 services. Through a series of posts on the social platform X, Microsoft confirmed that they had identified a potential cause of the impact and had taken steps to address it by reverting the suspected code.
In their posts published on a dedicated company page aimed at handling incidents related to their office software programs, Microsoft assured users that they were working towards resolving the situation. By the afternoon, the company reported that their tracking data indicated a significant recovery in the majority of impacted services following the implementation of their corrective measures.
Prior to Microsoft’s acknowledgment of the issue, several users had already taken to social media to express their inability to access their Outlook email accounts. Downdetector, a service that monitors outages, recorded thousands of reports from affected users. Outage reports for Microsoft 365, especially Outlook, reached their peak around 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time before gradually decreasing, with some users confirming the restoration of their access.
This recent incident adds to a string of disruptions in the tech industry, as earlier in the week, the communications platform Slack also experienced an outage that left numerous users unable to utilize the service.
