Michigan Prepares for Snow, Ice, Thunderstorms, and Tornadoes

Michigan is bracing for another round of severe weather just days after a recent ice storm left thousands without power in northern parts of the state. The western region is expected to experience snow transitioning to rain with a chance of freezing rain before clearing in the afternoon, as reported by the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.

Severe storms, including damaging winds up to 70 mph, localized flooding, large hail, and potential tornadoes are possible later in the day and evening. The highest risk period is forecast between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m., particularly along I-94 and southward.

In northern Michigan, most areas are expected to receive 1-2 inches of snow before a shift to freezing rain or rain, with strong east winds reaching gusts of 35-40 mph early Wednesday. Thunderstorms are also a concern, with a potential for strong storms, according to the NWS in Gaylord.

Eastern Michigan faces an enhanced risk of severe weather with damaging wind, heavy rainfall, and a possibility of tornadoes, according to the NWS in Detroit. Residents are urged to stay informed, have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, and be prepared to take action if warnings are issued.

Cleanup efforts are ongoing following the ice storm, with trees collapsing onto power lines and widespread power outages reported. A flood watch is in effect for parts of southeast Michigan, including Metro Detroit, due to expected heavy rainfall.

The NWS has issued a winter weather advisory for the Tri Cities and northern Thumb regions, where snow transitioning to freezing rain is expected, followed by rain with accumulations of up to two inches of snow and a tenth of an inch of ice.

As Michigan faces this severe weather threat, residents are advised to stay vigilant and prepared for potential hazards.
