Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera has been nominated by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to serve as ambassador to Panama. Trump praised Cabrera as a staunch advocate for “America First” principles, highlighting his role in driving economic growth and fostering international partnerships. In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed confidence in Cabrera’s understanding of Latin American politics, stating that he believes he will excel in representing the interests of the United States in Panama.
This nomination comes amidst Trump’s recent comments regarding U.S. control over the Panama Canal. The United States previously administered the canal before transferring control to Panama in 1999. Trump voiced concerns about Panama allegedly taking advantage of the situation, stating that the country is profiting excessively from the canal. He accused Chinese soldiers of unlawfully operating the canal and criticized the United States for providing substantial funding for repairs without having a say in its management.
Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino has refuted claims of Chinese influence over the canal’s operations. While China does not directly control the canal, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings has managed two ports situated at the canal’s entrances on the Caribbean and Pacific sides.
The announcement of Cabrera’s nomination as ambassador to Panama marks a significant development in U.S.-Panama relations. Trump’s choice reflects his administration’s focus on prioritizing American interests and maintaining a strong presence in the region. It remains to be seen how Cabrera will navigate the complexities of diplomacy in his new role and address the ongoing discussions surrounding the Panama Canal.
