Children attending the event with their parents were offered the opportunity to exchange toy guns for other toys. The initiative, which was initially proposed last month, was officially announced in the country’s government gazette earlier this week. While the program has been in place in Mexico City since 2019, it will now be implemented nationwide, spearheaded by the defense, interior, and public safety ministries with the backing of Mexican religious leaders.
Mexico continues to grapple with high levels of violent crime associated with the lucrative illegal drug trade. According to preliminary data from the national statistics institute, the country reported 31,062 homicides in 2023, with approximately 70 percent of these attributed to firearms. The stringent regulations on gun sales in Mexico make legal acquisition nearly impossible, prompting repeated calls to the United States to address the issue of arms trafficking across the border.
Recent reports indicate that an estimated 200,000 to half a million firearms are smuggled from the U.S. into Mexico annually, a concerning trend highlighted by a segment on “60 Minutes” last month. Mexican authorities have enlisted the support of American attorney Jonathan Lowy in efforts to disrupt this illicit flow of weapons, known as the “iron river.”
In a December interview with “60 Minutes,” Lowy emphasized the far-reaching implications of unregulated arms trafficking, linking it to various societal challenges. “If you think fentanyl overdoses are a problem, if you think migration across the border is a problem, if you think the spread of organized crime is a problem in the United States, then you should care about stopping the crime gun pipeline to Mexico,” Lowy stressed. “And you need to stop it at its source. Because all those problems are driven by the supply of U.S. guns to the cartels.”
