Mays Full Flower Moon A Spectacular Lunar Display!

The flower moon, also known as May’s full moon, will illuminate the sky on Sunday night, despite being a “micromoon.” Rising behind the lower Manhattan skyline and One World Trade Center in New York City on May 24, 2024, this celestial event will be a sight to behold. The full moon, technically peaking at 12:56 p.m. ET on Monday, will be visible on both Sunday and Monday evenings.

Although it is a micromoon, appearing smaller than a typical full moon due to its distance from Earth, the flower moon will shine brightly from a distance of 251,939 miles. Various indigenous tribes have their own names for this moon, such as the mulberry moon, frog moon, blossom moon, and more. Following this micromoon, there are seven more full moons to anticipate in 2025, including supermoons in October, November, and December.

Additionally, 2025 will bring two eclipse events: a total lunar eclipse on September 7 and 8, visible from several regions, and a partial solar eclipse on September 21, viewable in remote areas. For more news and updates, sign up for CNN’s Wonder Theory science newsletter on CNN.com.
