Lumberton Mayor Gina LaPlaca was arrested for driving under the influence with her 2-year-old son in the car, following a near-fatal crash. LaPlaca, a New Jersey mayor, was taken into custody after admitting to police that she had been drinking before picking up her son from daycare. Video footage captured her driving erratically and nearly hitting a utility pole while her child was in the back seat. Police found an open container of alcohol in her car, leading to charges of reckless driving, child neglect, endangerment, driving under the influence, and other related offenses. LaPlaca’s husband shared on Facebook that she is seeking help for her addiction. Despite the arrest, he emphasized her dedication to helping others and asked for privacy and compassion during this challenging time. LaPlaca, who resigned from her previous role as business administrator for Neptune Township, is scheduled to appear in court on April 28.
