Massive Turnout at Antigovernment Rally in Belgrade Sparks Chaos!

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Tensions escalated in central Belgrade on Saturday as Serbian anti-corruption protesters, riot police, and supporters of President Aleksandar Vucic confronted each other amidst massive anti-government rallies. Following a night of sporadic clashes, tens of thousands of people gathered for the demonstrations.

Riot police, alongside supporters of Vucic, were stationed in and around Pionirski Park, where Vucic’s supporters had set up camp surrounding parked tractors. On the opposite side of the street, ex-military veterans and bikers aligned themselves along the protest route leading from the national parliament to Slavija Square. The bikers slowly paraded, revving their engines, while students, donning fluorescent yellow vests, provided security between police and protesters.

The protests, which began in December after a fatal accident in Novi Sad blamed on corruption, have grown to include a diverse group of participants challenging Vucic’s 12-year rule. Students, teachers, farmers, and workers have united in demanding accountability and transparency from the government.

Despite tension and sporadic violence, the atmosphere among the protesters on Saturday remained upbeat. Residents offered warm food, grandmothers baked cookies, and students marched jubilantly. Organizers adjusted the protest location to Slavija Square to avoid confrontation and emphasized a peaceful demonstration.

While Vucic urged police to act with restraint, authorities anticipated a large turnout of demonstrators. Thirteen individuals have been charged in connection with the Novi Sad disaster, and the government has initiated an anti-corruption campaign, including the resignation of key officials.

The ongoing protests reflect a significant challenge to Vucic’s leadership, with diverse voices united in seeking reform and transparency within the government.
