Marlins Honor Jeff Conine, Son’s Heroics Secure Win

The Conine family enjoyed a memorable Sunday in Miami as Jeff Conine was inducted into the Marlins’ Hall of Fame in a touching ceremony before the game against the Pirates. Known as “Mr. Marlin,” Conine played a crucial role in the franchise’s World Series triumphs in 1997 and 2003.

Adding to the family’s joy, Conine’s son, Griffin, made his mark on the game by smashing a game-tying solo home run in the seventh inning. The Marlins secured a 3-2 victory with Derek Hill scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth, clinching three wins out of four in the opening series.

Griffin Conine expressed his excitement, stating, “From the ceremony to my game-changing moment, and then sealing the win—it’s been an amazing day. We’ve had three walk-off wins in four days, setting a great tone for the season.”

This impressive performance came just a day after Griffin’s exceptional catch over the left-field wall and marked his first home run of the season. The 27-year-old, acquired by Miami in 2020, is part of a unique baseball legacy, joining his father in playing for the Marlins.

Jeff Conine’s remarkable career with the Marlins was celebrated during the induction, where he was presented with a teal jacket in front of family, friends, and former teammates. The two-time All-Star enjoyed success with the team from 1993-97 and again in the 2003-2005 seasons, compiling impressive statistics over his tenure.

Reflecting on his journey with the Marlins, Conine expressed gratitude, saying, “It’s incredible to look back on the beginnings of this franchise and witness its growth over the years. I feel blessed to have been part of its inception and to have contributed to its success.”
