Police in Memphis reported that a man was accidentally shot by his dog this week when the animal jumped on a bed and triggered a gun. The incident occurred in the Frayser neighborhood just before 4 a.m. on Monday. The man was lying on the bed with a friend when the dog’s paw became caught in the gun’s trigger guard, causing the gun to discharge and graze the man’s upper left thigh. The dog, identified as a pit bull puppy named Oreo, inadvertently activated the gun. The man’s friend left the scene taking the gun with her. The man was taken to the hospital with noncritical injuries. The police found a spent shell casing in the front room. Although Tennessee does not mandate gun owners to secure their firearms, the Memphis Police Department advises residents to keep their guns locked and provides free gun locks at precincts.
