Man Arrested with Machete at US Capitol Visitor Center!

WASHINGTON (AP) — A man was apprehended on Wednesday after attempting to enter the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center with a machete and knives, according to authorities. The U.S. Capitol Police reported that the man’s bag, passing through the X-ray scanner, revealed a machete, and further inspection uncovered three knives inside. The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed by the police at this time, was detained on charges related to possessing a dangerous weapon, as stated by law enforcement officials. Security screening on the north side of the visitor center was briefly paused but has since resumed operation.

The incident unfolded as members of the public were making their way into the Capitol to pay their respects to former President Jimmy Carter, whose body lies in state for a second day in the Capitol Rotunda. President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to arrive at the U.S. Capitol later in the day, marking his return to the building since his presidency ended in 2021. Trump plans to honor Carter before proceeding to a meeting with Senate Republicans.
