Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry (R) has announced his intention to proudly display the Make America Great Again (MAGA) flag at the governor’s mansion in honor of President-elect Trump’s upcoming inauguration. Governor Landry extended an invitation to the people of Louisiana to join in displaying the flag as well.
In a statement released on Friday, Governor Landry emphasized a shift in national priorities under the incoming Trump administration, stating, “Gone are the days of open borders. Gone are the days where Americans have to worry about gas and grocery prices while taxpayer dollars are shipped overseas.” He went on to express his optimism for the future, declaring, “Today, under President Trump, begins a renaissance in this Nation,” highlighting a renewed focus on putting America and its citizens first. Governor Landry remarked, “In Louisiana, we think that is worthy of celebrating.”
This announcement from Governor Landry coincides with similar gestures from various Republican-led states, where U.S. flags will be flown at full-staff to mark the inauguration on January 20th. The decision in Louisiana had initially been to keep flags at half-staff following the tragic terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day, in which a rented pickup truck was driven into a crowd on Bourbon Street, resulting in the loss of 14 lives and numerous injuries.
Governors across several states, including Florida, North Dakota, Iowa, Idaho, and Nebraska, have opted to raise their flags to full-staff for the upcoming inauguration, despite the ongoing mourning period for former President Carter, who passed away late last year. It has been indicated that these flags will be lowered back to half-staff following the ceremony on January 20th.
Additionally, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has confirmed that flags at the Capitol Hill will be flown at full-staff during the presidential inauguration and will be subsequently lowered to half-staff the following day to continue honoring the memory of former President Carter.
This decision to display the MAGA flag and raise U.S. flags at full-staff reflects a sense of optimism and celebration among certain political figures as the nation prepares for the inauguration of the incoming president. The symbolic gestures also acknowledge the need to balance national pride and unity with expressions of mourning for significant losses.
