“Lizzo to Star as Music Legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Amazon MGM Studios’ ‘Rosetta'”
Lizzo is all set to make her mark on the screen! The Grammy-winning artist has secured her first leading role as she is gearing up to portray Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the American gospel singer hailed as the “Godmother of rock and roll,” in the upcoming film “Rosetta” from Amazon MGM Studios.
Excited about the news, Lizzo, 36, took to Instagram to express her joy, sharing a snapshot of Deadline’s article on the casting announcement with the caption, “Black people made rock n roll yeaaaah.” She further shared on her Instagram story, “It’s finally out ya’ll. I’m so excited and honored.”
The screenplay for “Rosetta” will be penned by Natalie Chaidez (known for “The Flight Attendant” and “Queen of the South”) and Kwynn Perry (“Tigerbelles” and “The Burned Photo”). Alongside Lizzo, the project will be produced by Kevin Beisler, Significant Productions’ Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Forest Whitaker.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a trailblazing gospel singer who blended spiritual lyrics with electric guitar in the 1930s, earning her the moniker “Godmother of rock and roll,” will be brought to life in this biopic.
This marks Lizzo’s return to the big screen following her role in 2019’s “Hustlers,” where she starred alongside Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu as Liz, a stripper involved in a scheme to swindle wealthy patrons.
In addition to her acting endeavors, Lizzo has been candid about her mental health and weight loss journey, coinciding with the release of her latest single and music video, “Still Bad,” ahead of her upcoming album “Love in Real Life.”
During a recent performance at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, Lizzo shared her struggles with depression in 2023 and spoke about overcoming hardships. The artist has been embroiled in legal battles with former employees over allegations of harassment and a hostile work environment, which she has vehemently denied.
