Liam and Olivia Continue Reign as Top Baby Names for Sixth Year!

WASHINGTON (AP) — Liam and Olivia continue to dominate as the most popular baby names in the U.S. for 2024, marking the sixth consecutive year at the top of the list. The Social Security Administration tracks the names given to newborns in each state, with records dating back to 1880. Just in time for Mother’s Day, the agency released the most sought-after names for Social Security cards.

Liam has maintained its position as the most popular boys’ name for eight years, while Olivia has led the girls’ list for six years in a row. Emma and Noah secured the second spots for girls and boys, respectively, for the sixth year running. Notably, Sofia entered the top 10 girls’ names for the first time, replacing Luna.

Following Liam, the top boys’ names include Noah, Oliver, Theodore, James, Henry, Mateo, Elijah, Lucas, and William. After Olivia, the most popular girls’ names are Emma, Amelia, Charlotte, Mia, Sophia, Isabella, Evelyn, Ava, and Sofia.

Sophie Kihm, editor-in-chief of the baby naming website nameberry, observed that American parents are increasingly selecting names with cross-cultural appeal. Kihm noted that heritage choices are a growing trend, reflecting a desire for names that are universally recognizable.

The Social Security Administration’s data for 2024 shows a slight uptick in the American birthrate, with 3.61 million babies born. Social media influencers and popular TV shows are influencing name choices, according to the Administration. Noteworthy increases in popularity include Ailany, a Hawaiian name meaning “chief,” for girls, and Truce, an Old English name meaning “peace,” for boys.
