In 2000, a live album was released featuring songs from The Black Crowes and Led Zeppelin icon Jimmy Page, recorded during a two-night stand. Surprisingly, the album did not include any Black Crowes songs fans were expecting. Now, twenty-six years later, the misstep has been rectified with the release of “Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes: Live at the Greek,” a 36-track album restoring 16 previously unreleased songs and providing a better glimpse into this unique rock collaboration.
Singer-songwriter Chris Robinson describes the project as special and electric, highlighting the high energy and connection felt among the musicians during the recordings at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in 1999. The live performances captured a powerful moment in their musical journey, showcasing a cohesive group rather than a mere collaboration.
The original album featured Zeppelin classics and blues and R&B standards, but no Black Crowes songs due to contractual restrictions. The anniversary edition now includes beloved Black Crowes tunes like “No Speak No Slave,” “Hard to Handle,” and “Wiser Time,” along with new interpretations by Page, such as “She Talks to Angels.”
Page, along with the Robinson brothers and other band members, felt a strong camaraderie and energy on stage, resulting in a seamless and memorable performance. The anniversary edition also features unreleased songs from soundchecks and an original jam session track named “Jams,” adding exciting surprises for fans of the band.
The collaboration between Page and The Black Crowes at The Greek concerts marked the beginning of a enduring partnership. Following these shows, the band embarked on a successful American tour in the summer of 2000 and remain friends to this day. Reflecting on the experience, Page expresses gratitude for the joyful musical connection shared with the band members. The re-release of the album coincides with The Black Crowes’ recent creative success, including a Grammy nomination for their album “Happiness Bastards.” Chris Robinson reflects on the timing of the anniversary release, believing that things happen when they are meant to and emphasizing the importance of allowing events to unfold naturally.
