Americans’ opinions on Trump’s intentions to acquire Greenland are split, with half deeming it a poor decision. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Egede responded by stating, “We do not wish to become Americans or Danes; we are Kalaallit (Greenlanders). We are not up for sale and cannot be seized. The future of Greenland is determined by us.” This ongoing conflict overseas holds significance for Americans. Stay informed by signing up for USA TODAY’s Russia-Ukraine Crisis newsletter.
Furthermore, Greenlanders have expressed shock, intrigue, and bewilderment at Trump’s fervor for the Arctic territory. This is not the first time Trump has suggested taking over Greenland, nor is it the first time Egede has resisted such proposals. In January, Trump claimed that the U.S. requires the territory for national security reasons. Despite the presence of a military base in Greenland, increased control over the entire island would allow Washington to enhance protection against expansionist actions by Russia and China.
Trump emphasized the visible presence of Chinese and Russian ships, asserting, “You don’t even need binoculars. You look outside. You have China ships all over the place. You have Russian ships all over the place. We’re not letting that happen.” In February, Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen affirmed that Greenland is an integral part of the kingdom of Denmark and is not available for purchase.
