A Maryland father who was wrongly deported to El Salvador is currently being held at a large prison in the country, according to a State Department official in recent court documents. The U.S. Supreme Court ordered the Trump Administration to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old Salvadoran national who has lived in the United States for over ten years. Following this directive, a federal judge ordered immediate information on his location to be provided by the administration.
Michael Kozak, a senior official at the State Department, confirmed on April 12 that Abrego Garcia is alive and detained at the Terrorism Confinement Center in El Salvador. Despite court orders for daily updates, the Trump administration has not disclosed plans for his return to the United States.
U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis of Maryland has mandated daily reports on Abrego Garcia’s whereabouts and the actions taken to bring him back to the U.S. The family is requesting assistance for his safe repatriation and documentation for his re-entry and stay in the United States.
The Trump administration acknowledges their mistake in deporting Abrego Garcia and placing him in El Salvador, but has not outlined a clear plan for his return. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele is due to visit the White House, but the administration has ruled out his involvement in Abrego Garcia’s return.
Abrego Garcia was detained by immigration agents in March and accused of gang ties without evidence. His wife and young son are suing the government for his repatriation.
