Kevin Durant’s 42-point performance propelled the Phoenix Suns to a significant victory as they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 123-112 on Friday night. This win not only saw the Suns triumph over one of the top NBA teams but also allowed them to surpass the Dallas Mavericks for the 10th position in the Western Conference standings, positioning them for a potential spot in the play-in tournament.
Despite falling behind early with an 11-7 deficit, the Suns surged ahead with a 16-9 run to claim the lead. Although Cleveland briefly regained the lead on a Darius Garland jumper late in the first quarter, Durant’s efforts ensured Phoenix entered the second quarter with the advantage. The Suns extended their lead with key plays, including two 3-pointers by Royce O’Neale and a floater by Devin Booker, maintaining an 11-point lead heading into halftime.
O’Neale, contributing 15 points off the bench and sinking 5-of-8 3-point attempts, emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities and staying aggressive. Booker recorded 17 points and 10 assists, while Tyus Jones added 16 points. Oso Ighodaro secured 13 rebounds, and Durant showcased a well-rounded performance with eight rebounds and six assists.
Phoenix played without Bradley Beal, who missed his third consecutive game due to a hamstring injury, and Grayson Allen, sidelined for five games with a foot injury. Despite these absences, the Suns have been successful in their recent games, winning three consecutive matchups and securing victories in four of their last five outings.
In the Cavaliers’ camp, Donovan Mitchell led with 18 points, five rebounds, and six assists, supported by De’Andre Hunter who contributed 17 points off the bench. Evan Mobley and Ty Jerome each added 16 points and five assists, with Mobley also grabbing 12 rebounds. Cleveland, after a 16-game winning streak, has now faced four consecutive losses, dropping to a record of 56-14 and sitting behind the Oklahoma City Thunder (58-12) in the league standings.
Looking ahead, Cleveland aims to reverse its recent struggles as they conclude their Western road trip with matchups against the Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers.
