Keanu Reeves revealed during a recent appearance on CBS Mornings that his heart and knees seem to be in disagreement when it comes to the prospect of starring in another John Wick movie. The 60-year-old actor, known for his iconic role as the skilled assassin John Wick, shared his thoughts on the possibility of a fifth installment in the action-packed franchise.
While promoting his voice role as the villain Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Reeves addressed the question of returning to the John Wick series. “You can never say never — but my knees right now are saying, ‘You can’t do another John Wick,'” he humorously admitted. Despite his knees potentially resisting the physical demands of the role, Reeves expressed his willingness to revisit the character, stating, “So my heart [wants to], but I don’t know if my knees can do it.”
Reflecting on his cameo appearance in the upcoming spinoff film “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,” Reeves acknowledged the physical challenges associated with the intense action sequences synonymous with the franchise. However, he remains open to reprising the role that has garnered a dedicated fan base worldwide.
Director Jeff Fowler, who collaborated with Reeves on Sonic the Hedgehog 3, light-heartedly pointed out the advantage of voice acting in contrast to physically demanding roles. “Which is why you can voice Shadow for, like, decades to come — there are no physical limitations, just your voice!” he remarked, prompting Reeves to playfully respond, “I’m free!”
The John Wick franchise, which began with the release of the first film in 2014, has evolved into a global phenomenon, with four successful movies collectively grossing over $1 billion worldwide. The series has expanded to include a prequel series titled “The Continental,” as well as various video game adaptations and a comic book series.
Despite the franchise’s success and the enduring popularity of his character, Reeves maintains a humble approach to his involvement. At a recent 10th-anniversary screening in Los Angeles, he expressed gratitude for the collaborative nature of filmmaking. Reflecting on the physical demands of portraying John Wick, Reeves humorously remarked, “there’s a couple of times where you throw up or puke or whatever, but that’s what makes it good.”
Co-directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, who have been integral to the franchise’s development, credit Reeves as an essential component of its success. Stahelski emphasized the significance of Reeves’ stoicism and work ethic, stating, “The stoicism that John Wick shows is really a big part of who Keanu is.” Leitch added that Reeves brings a unique blend of passion, physicality, and emotional depth to the character, making him irreplaceable in the role.
