The all-female crew of Blue Origin, which featured pop star Katy Perry, successfully completed their journey into space early Monday. Lasting approximately 11 minutes, the flight reached over 60 miles above Earth, surpassing the Kármán line, which marks the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space at 62 miles above sea level. In addition to Perry, the crew included Lauren Sanchez, a journalist and helicopter pilot who is engaged to Blue Origin owner Jeff Bezos. Other members of the crew were journalist Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist and civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn.
Upon returning to Earth and exiting the capsule, Perry raised her hand to the sky and kissed the ground. She shared that she brought a daisy into space in honor of her 4-year-old daughter, Daisy, whom she shares with fiancé Orlando Bloom. King mentioned that Perry sang “What a Wonderful World” during their time in space.
This mission by Blue Origin represents the first all-female spaceflight since 1963, following Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo spaceflight. The launch window opened at around 8:30 a.m. CDT on Monday. Perry expressed her excitement on social media, stating that her dream of going to space for 15 years was finally coming true.
The successful 11th crewed New Shepard flight, officially named NS-31, took off from Blue Origin’s Launch Site One in western Texas. ABC News’ Katie Kindelan contributed to this report.
