In New York, a jury has been selected for the retrial of Sarah Palin’s lawsuit against the New York Times. The lawsuit alleges defamation by the newspaper in a 2017 editorial regarding gun control. Palin, 61, a former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate, lost her initial trial in 2022 but a retrial was ordered by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals due to concerns about the previous verdict being tainted by the judge’s rulings. Opening statements are scheduled to begin on Tuesday before U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff. The jury, consisting of five women and four men, was chosen by Rakoff and the legal teams on both sides. Palin’s lawsuit centers on a Times editorial that inaccurately linked her to a 2011 mass shooting in Arizona. The Times promptly corrected the error and issued an apology. Times spokesperson Charlie Stadtlander has emphasized that the editorial was not specifically about Palin.
