Duntsova's campaign team announced on Telegram that "errors" in her application to register as a candidate prevented her from running against Putin in the March elections.

PLEDGE TO END THE WAR IN UKRAINE

The decision came just three days after Duntsova, 40, applied to the electoral commission to become a candidate. If elected, Duntsova had pledged to work to end the war in Ukraine and free political prisoners.

Putin's opponents see the decision as proof that no one with opposition views will be allowed to run in the first presidential election since the Ukraine war.

ELECTIONS IN RUSSIA

The country's Federation Council convened on December 7 to determine the date of the presidential election and decided to hold the election on March 17, 2024.

PUTIN HAD ANNOUNCED HIS CANDIDACY

Russian President Putin announced on December 8 that he would run in the presidential election to be held in 2024.

The previous presidential election in Russia was held on March 18, 2018, and Putin was elected president with 76.69 percent of the vote.
