Passenger Opens Plane Door on Taxiway, Faces Charges

A JetBlue spokesperson reported that a passenger on board a plane opened an overwing exit without apparent cause and remained on the aircraft. Massachusetts State Police responded to reports of a disturbance after the plane had entered an active taxiway. One person was detained in connection with the incident.

According to state police, just before takeoff, a passenger expressed a desire to deplane by suddenly and unexpectedly opening an aircraft door. Fellow passengers intervened and restrained the individual until troopers arrived to take them into custody for further questioning. The passenger, whose identity remains undisclosed, is anticipated to be charged and is scheduled for arraignment in East Boston District Court on Wednesday morning.

Passenger Fred Wynn, speaking to WBZ-TV from the aircraft, recounted the events. Wynn stated that the disruptive passenger was seated behind him with his girlfriend, engaging in an argument that escalated. The boyfriend became agitated, stood up, proceeded down the aisle, and forcibly opened the emergency door before being subdued by an FBI agent and subsequently removed from the plane by state police.

Other passengers on different flights reported delays due to the situation. Tim Wahl, who had just arrived from Phoenix, shared his experience of circling around Boston before landing. Upon arrival, Wahl witnessed the commotion surrounding the incident, with police presence and the emergency slide deployed on the grounded plane.

State police assured that preliminary investigations suggested the occurrence was isolated, posing no immediate threat to public safety. Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an inquiry into the matter.
