NEW YORK (AP) — Jalen Brunson expressed optimism on Sunday about his recovery from a sprained right ankle and his chances of rejoining the New York Knicks lineup before the playoffs. Brunson, the All-Star point guard, has missed 12 consecutive games and remains uncertain about his return timeline, but he believes he is making progress and aims to be back on the court before the regular season concludes in two weeks.
“I’m hopeful that I can return before the playoffs,” Brunson stated. “It’s important to me to get some game time before the intense playoff push, but my main focus is ensuring that I am fully healthy.”
Brunson sustained the injury on March 6 in Los Angeles during a game against the Lakers. He provided an update on his recovery, noting that he is now able to sprint and participate in basketball activities, but he is not yet ready for game action. The Knicks have eight games remaining in the regular season after Sunday’s match against Portland.
While Brunson aims to be completely healthy before his return, he is open to playing if cleared by the team’s medical staff, acknowledging the mental aspect of his rehabilitation process.
The Knicks have maintained a solid performance in Brunson’s absence, holding a 6-5 record and remaining in third place in the Eastern Conference. Despite injuries to backup point guards Deuce McBride and Cam Payne, the team has secured a playoff berth.
Coach Tom Thibodeau emphasized the collective effort required to compensate for Brunson’s absence, highlighting the team’s resilience. Brunson has played 61 games this season and requires four more appearances to be eligible for end-of-season awards, although he prioritizes his health over individual accomplishments.
Reflecting on last year’s postseason disappointment due to injuries, Brunson remains hopeful for a smoother playoff run this time. He is encouraged by his recovery progress and remains focused on returning to top form for the crucial games ahead.
