ISTANBUL (AP) — Tens of thousands of individuals congregated on Istanbul’s Galata Bridge on New Year’s Day to demonstrate solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Demonstrators proudly waved both Turkish and Palestinian flags while chanting “Free Palestine” during the protest, which was orchestrated by the National Will Platform – a conglomerate comprising over 300 pro-Palestinian and Islamic entities.
Bilal Erdoğan, the son of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, took to the stage to address the assembled crowd, advocating for unwavering support for Gaza and condemning the actions of Israel in the region. In his impassioned speech, he drew parallels to the recent uprising in Syria, where rebel forces successfully ousted President Bashar Assad. Erdoğan stated, “Muslims in Syria exhibited unwavering determination and patience, ultimately achieving victory. Following in the footsteps of Syria, Gaza too shall triumph over the prevailing siege.”
Aerial footage captured by drones showcased the remarkable sight of thousands of protesters flooding the Galata Bridge, as well as the adjacent Eminönü and Sirkeci neighborhoods. The sheer magnitude of the gathering underscored the depth of emotions and widespread support for the cause.
President Erdoğan, a vocal critic of the Israeli offensive in Gaza, has consistently voiced his opposition to the military actions undertaken by Israel in the region. The demonstration on the Galata Bridge served as a poignant reminder of the enduring solidarity shared by many in Turkey for the plight of the Palestinian people in Gaza.
