Jerusalem (Reuters) – An Israeli security delegation arrived in Qatar on Sunday for discussions regarding a potential Gaza hostage and ceasefire agreement, as efforts for a resolution intensify ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on Jan. 20. The delegation, led by Mossad Head David Barnea, Shin Bet domestic security service chief Ronen Bar, and the military’s hostage briefing commander Nitzan Alon, is part of renewed mediation efforts involving Qatar, Egypt, and the United States.
The revitalized negotiations come as both Israeli and Palestinian officials cautiously suggest progress in the indirect talks with Hamas, the militant group governing Gaza. However, details of the discussions have been closely guarded. One of the fundamental challenges in the negotiations remains the divergence in objectives, with Hamas insisting on an end to hostilities, while Israel requires assurances that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to its citizens.
The conflict dates back to October 2023 when Hamas fighters breached Israeli borders, resulting in casualties and hostage-taking.
