Iran Denies Assassination Plot Against Trump During Campaign!

The interview marks the Iranian president’s first engagement with foreign media since the U.S. presidential election. It was conducted with a government interpreter present, providing real-time translation. NBC News conducted an independent review of the translation. In November, the Justice Department leveled charges against an Iranian individual in connection with an alleged murder-for-hire plot targeting Donald Trump when he was the Republican Party’s presidential candidate. Additionally, two others were charged for purportedly planning the assassination of an Iranian American journalist and activist known for criticizing the Iranian government’s treatment of women.

U.S. authorities have asserted that the alleged plot was aimed at avenging the death of a prominent Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani. Soleimani was killed in Baghdad through a U.S. drone strike authorized by Trump during his initial presidential term.

In mid-October of the previous year, Iran communicated through written correspondence via Swiss diplomats, reassuring that they had no intention of seeking retribution against Trump, according to a U.S. official as previously reported by NBC News.

Both U.S. and European governments have long observed Iran’s attempts to silence dissident Iranians residing outside the country who openly criticize the regime. Last year, the United Kingdom summoned Iran’s top diplomat in London following incidents where Iranian journalists based in Britain were reportedly subjected to intimidation tactics by Tehran. One journalist even fell victim to a stabbing incident, attributed to Iran by some, although Tehran has denied these accusations.

A comprehensive report on the interview, which delved into a variety of topics encompassing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Iran’s proxy militias in the region, women’s rights within Iran, and its nuclear program, is set to be aired on NBC Nightly News later today.
