Investigation Launched at Countess of Chester Hospital Following Mysterious Deaths

Police are currently investigating several suspects connected to the Countess of Chester Hospital, where former nurse Lucy Letby was found guilty of the murder of seven infants and the attempted murder of seven others. Letby, 35, is currently serving multiple life sentences for these horrendous crimes committed between June 2015 and June 2016.

After Letby’s trial and conviction in October 2023, Cheshire Constabulary initiated an investigation into potential corporate manslaughter at the hospital. However, the focus has now shifted to determine whether gross negligence manslaughter, a distinct criminal offense related to individual actions, may have also occurred.

Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes, leading the investigation known as Operation Hummingbird, stated, “Our priority is to maintain the integrity of our ongoing investigations and to support the many families who are at the heart of these.” While suspects have been identified, no arrests or charges have been made thus far.

The investigation spans beyond the Countess of Chester Hospital to include deaths and collapses of babies at both the Countess of Chester Hospital and the Liverpool Women’s Hospital between 2012 and 2016. Authorities emphasize the importance of respecting the investigative process and the privacy of the families involved to ensure justice is served.
