*Mysterious Homeowners Share Their Experience on ‘This Old House’*
The renovation of a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home is currently being showcased on Season 46 of the iconic show that has been highlighting home improvement projects since 1978. The homeowners, Field and Bhothinard, decided to feature their project on the show because of their familiarity and admiration for it, viewing it as a unique opportunity. While initially unsure about working with TV shows, they found participating in the show to be a joy and a privilege, contributing to a legacy of quality television. The project, completed between March and November 2024, focused on expanding and improving the kitchen, reconfiguring the first floor for better entertainment space, and updating essential systems like plumbing and HVAC.
The renovation also included a two-story rear addition for a new primary suite, as well as enhancements like waterproofing, new siding, and energy-efficient windows. The homeowners were surprised by the scale of the project, as they had initially only planned on making minor adjustments to the house, not taking on a major renovation. The show’s senior series producer, Ferguson, explained how homes are selected for the show through various means, including recommendations from professionals like architects.
Field and Bhothinard shared that their experience with the show involved regular communication with the production team, making the renovation project a significant part of their daily lives. They had to temporarily relocate during the renovations but were actively involved with the crew throughout the process. The sense of camaraderie and teamwork among the show’s cast and production staff created a family-like atmosphere, both on and off the screen.
The homeowners appreciated how each person involved in the project brought their unique perspective and expertise, enhancing the overall outcome. The contractor, Dettmore, focused on enhancing the functionality and design of the spaces, leaving his mark on the project. Field and Bhothinard found it rewarding to witness the collaborative efforts and individual contributions that shaped the final result, reflecting a blend of their original vision and the creative input of the team.
We are fortunate to have Jeff Jordan, our architect, who has creatively responded to our desire for natural light in a way that we never even thought to request. Moreover, the HVAC system has been designed with a touch of elegance and minimalism that Richard envisioned but we wouldn’t have known to ask for.
“This Old House” is known for showcasing local landmarks in the areas where they are working. In a recent episode, Bhothinard and Field had the opportunity to feature the James Rose Center in Ridgewood, a place they admire for its embodiment of James Rose’s unique perspective on landscape architecture. They have put in a great deal of effort to renovate the center and preserve its historical significance within the community, and they hope to raise awareness about this hidden gem in northern New Jersey.
The show’s host, O’Connor, who grew up in the nearby neighborhood of Maplewood, found it particularly enjoyable to witness how elements of his hometown were seamlessly integrated throughout the episodes.
Following the completion of the renovation, Bhothinard shared that they officially moved back into their home in mid-December and are still adjusting to all the new updates. Despite the transitional phase, both homeowners expressed gratitude for the life-changing experience the renovation project has brought them.
Field emphasized the joy of collaborating with the entire team and being part of a show that not only celebrates the project itself but also acknowledges the craftsmanship and dedication of the individuals involved.
