Screenwriter and director Jeff Baena, known for his work on unconventional comedies such as “The Little Hours” and “Life After Beth,” has passed away at the age of 47. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the unfortunate news of Baena’s death, with his body being discovered on Friday at a Los Angeles residence. At this time, the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Baena, who was married to actress Aubrey Plaza, had collaborated with her on projects like “The Little Hours,” a dark comedy set in a 14th-century convent, and “Life After Beth,” a zombie satire. “The Little Hours” drew inspiration from “The Decameron” and Baena’s studies in Medieval and Renaissance literature, earning praise for its modern sensibility and irreverence. Similarly, “Life After Beth” was commended for its unique and humorous take on the horror genre.
Among Baena’s other directorial works is the 2022 film “Spin Me Round,” a dark comedy starring Allison Brie, who also co-wrote the script. He also helmed “Joshy,” a dramedy featuring Thomas Middleditch, Adam Pally, and Nick Kroll. Additionally, Baena collaborated with Brie on the 2020 psychological drama “Horse Girl.”
In addition to his directing endeavors, Baena co-wrote the 2004 film “I Heart Huckabees” directed by David O. Russell, exploring existential themes with humor. His films have been showcased at prestigious festivals like Sundance and South by Southwest, and distributed by major platforms including Netflix, IFC, and Lionsgate.
On the television front, Baena created, wrote, directed, and produced “Cinema Toast” for Showtime. A graduate of NYU film school, he began his career as a production assistant for Robert Zemeckis, later serving as an assistant editor for Russell before embarking on a successful writing partnership with him.
Baena is survived by his wife Aubrey Plaza, his mother Barbara Stern, stepfather Roger Stern, father Scott Baena, stepmother Michele Baena, brother Brad Baena, and stepsister and stepbrother Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman.
The entertainment industry mourns the loss of Jeff Baena, a talented storyteller whose unique vision and creative contributions will be remembered by many.
