Indian Officials Confirm First HMPV Cases — No Need to Worry!

HMPV infections are on the rise in China, garnering global attention. However, Dr. Carla Garcia Carreno, the director of infection prevention and control at the Children’s Medical Center Plano in Texas, assured CBS News that there is no immediate concern regarding a potential new pandemic. She emphasized that the virus has been circulating for some time, indicating that individuals may have developed immunity. Dr. Carreno also noted that unlike the highly mutable COVID-19 virus, HMPV remains relatively stable, making it more manageable to combat.

In response to the increasing cases of HMPV infections, India’s federal government has urged states to enhance surveillance of respiratory illnesses and promote awareness about preventing the spread of the virus. Recommended preventive measures include covering the mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, practicing frequent handwashing, and wearing masks in crowded settings.

Indian Health Minister J. P. Nadda reassured the public that HMPV is not a novel virus, as it was first identified in 2001 and has been circulating globally for years. He emphasized the vigilance of the country’s health systems and surveillance networks, stating that there is no cause for alarm. Nadda disclosed that infected individuals in India had no recent travel history and disclosed that the government is closely monitoring the situation in China and neighboring countries.

Regarding the situation in India, the Health Ministry affirmed that HMPV infections do not pose a significant threat, as there has been no abnormal surge in respiratory illnesses reported. The ministry stated that India is well-prepared to handle any potential increase in cases, emphasizing that HMPV infections typically result in mild, self-limiting conditions with most patients recovering without complications.

Notably, health agencies such as the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have not expressed overt concerns about the HMPV infections in Asia.
