Important: Recall Alert for Popular Canned Tuna

If you’ve recently bought canned tuna, it’s advisable to double-check your pantry contents. On February 7, Tri-Union Seafoods issued a voluntary recall of its canned tuna products due to a potential manufacturing defect compromising their quality and safety. The company sells canned tuna under various brand names such as Trader Joe’s, Genova, Van Camp’s, and H-E-B.

Reason for the recall:
According to the company’s announcement, shared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, the recall is a precautionary measure initiated due to a manufacturing issue with some “easy open” pull-tab can lids. This defect could affect the product seal integrity over time, resulting in potential leakage or contamination with clostridium botulinum, a dangerous form of food poisoning that can be fatal. Symptoms of botulism include breathing problems, muscle paralysis, and in severe cases, death. Consumers are advised not to consume the affected tuna and dispose of it, even if it appears normal or smells fine.

List of recalled products:
To identify if your canned tuna is part of the recall, check the UPC and “best if used by” dates, which typically range from December 2027 to January 2028. The following products are included in the recall:

– Trader Joe’s Solid Light Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil
– Trader Joe’s Solid White Tuna in Olive Oil
– Trader Joe’s Solid White Tuna in Water
– Trader Joe’s Solid White Water Low Sodium
– Trader Joe’s Solid White Water No Salt Added
– Genova Solid White Tuna in Olive Oil
– Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil
– Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil (4-pack and 6-pack options)
– Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt
– Van Camp’s Solid Light Tuna in Oil
– Van Camp’s Solid Light Tuna in Oil (4-pack option)
– H-E-B Solid White Tuna in Water (4-pack option)

Affected locations:
The recalled products were sold at various retailers including Trader Joe’s, Costco, Harris Teeter, and Walmart, across more than 20 states.

What to do if you have the recalled canned tuna:
If you have any of the recalled products, refrain from consuming or using them.
