LONDON (AP) — The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, warmly welcomed the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on Saturday and assured him of the nation’s steadfast support in the wake of recent international events that transpired at the White House involving President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy’s arrival was met with enthusiastic cheers from a crowd gathered outside 10 Downing St., where Starmer greeted him with a hug before leading him inside.
“In light of the resounding cheers echoing on the streets, it is evident that you have the full backing of the entire United Kingdom,” Starmer conveyed to the leader of the conflict-stricken nation. “We stand in unity with you and Ukraine, for however long the journey may be.” Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to Starmer and the people of the U.K. for their unwavering support and camaraderie.
The encounter took place following a tumultuous diplomatic exchange the previous day, when President Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly criticized Zelenskyy in the Oval Office for what they perceived as a lack of gratitude towards U.S. assistance. Zelenskyy was expected to finalize an agreement providing the U.S. access to valuable mineral resources, as Trump exerted pressure on Ukraine to seek a resolution to the ongoing conflict with Russia. However, no agreement was signed as Zelenskyy departed without committing to any deals.
Originally planned for Sunday, Zelenskyy’s meeting with Starmer was expedited in light of the events in Washington. This meeting precedes a summit with other European leaders to address matters concerning Ukraine and fortification of defenses across the continent.
Additionally, Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with King Charles III on Sunday prior to the summit, which is set to take place at Lancaster House, a historic mansion in close proximity to Buckingham Palace.
