Iconic F1 Icon Eddie Jordan Dies at 76

SHANGHAI (AP) — The family of Eddie Jordan, the former Formula 1 team owner and media personality, has announced his passing at the age of 76. Known affectionately as “EJ,” Jordan led his own F1 team in the 1990s and 2000s, captivating fans with his humor, strong viewpoints, and flamboyant style. Following the sale of his team in 2005, Jordan became a popular TV pundit.

Jordan had been battling aggressive bladder and prostate cancer that had spread to his spine and pelvis. He passed away peacefully in Cape Town early Thursday, surrounded by his loved ones.

Described as charismatic, energetic, and charming, Jordan’s presence will be deeply missed by many. F1 President Stefano Domenicali hailed him as a key figure of his era, noting his ability to bring smiles and genuine brilliance to those around him.

A trailblazing Irish businessman, Jordan transitioned from lower-level racing to F1 in 1991, giving a young Michael Schumacher his first F1 opportunity. His mentorship and impact extended to drivers like Damon Hill, Rubens Barrichello, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen, among others.

Jordan Grand Prix achieved notable success under his leadership, winning four races before his departure in 2005. Aston Martin Team Principal Andy Cowell praised Jordan’s visionary contributions, emphasizing his enduring influence on the motorsport community.

The Irish government also paid tribute to Jordan’s remarkable legacy in the world of auto racing, recognizing his significant impact on the sport.

Minister Simon Harris expressed that Jordan’s passion, vision, and leadership had a significant impact on the sport, inspiring many individuals. He mentioned that Jordan’s legacy will continue to be remembered. When Jordan bravely shared his cancer diagnosis last year, he used the opportunity to encourage listeners of his podcast to address any health concerns promptly. He emphasized the importance of taking action and urged everyone to prioritize their health by getting tested.
