Hungary’s Influence on Ukraine’s EU Membership in Limbo

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared on Saturday that Hungary holds the key to Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union, signaling a significant hurdle in the relationship between the two neighboring countries. During an exclusive State of the Nation address in Budapest, Orbán portrayed Ukraine as a strategic buffer between Russia and NATO nations, downplaying its chances of EU membership despite its ambitions to align with the Western alliance. He firmly stated that the fate of Ukraine’s EU accession rests with the Hungarian people.

Orbán’s remarks underscored his contentious stance towards Ukraine, suggesting that the country’s EU ambitions could be vetoed by Hungary due to perceived economic threats, particularly to Hungarian farmers and the national economy. With unanimous consent from all EU member states required for new admissions, Orbán’s close ties with the Kremlin have posed obstacles in the EU’s efforts to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

While Hungary has provided refuge to Ukrainian war victims, Orbán’s alignment with Russia on economic and energy matters has hindered EU aid to Kyiv. The Prime Minister’s skepticism about Ukraine’s sovereignty and NATO aspirations echoes recent sentiments from the U.S. government, indicating a shift in international dynamics. Orbán’s affinity towards former President Trump’s administration has led to crackdowns on civil society, media freedom, and LGBTQ+ rights, with plans to further tighten control over foreign-funded entities in Hungary.

Orbán’s proposed constitutional amendments and strict policies reflect his government’s nationalist agenda, raising concerns about democratic freedoms in Hungary. His intent to redefine gender norms and target organizations receiving foreign aid showcase a growing authoritarian trend in Hungarian politics. The future of Ukraine’s EU membership hangs in the balance, with Hungary emerging as a significant player in shaping the region’s geopolitical landscape.

The steps to ban the annual LGBTQ+ Pride parade in Budapest this summer were discussed by Orbán. He proposed a proactive approach, stating, “I suggest we go on a counterattack here.” He further advised the Pride organizers not to invest in the preparation of this year’s parade, deeming it a “waste of money and time.”
