If you’ve ever dealt with acute or chronic hip discomfort, you understand the challenges it can bring. According to the American College of Rheumatology, close to 800,000 knee replacements occur yearly in the U.S., with half a million individuals requiring a hip replacement. Hip pain affects people differently based on age, gender, and lifestyle choices.

Dr. Matthew Anastasi, a sports medicine specialist at Mayo Clinic, identifies osteoarthritis as a primary cause of hip pain, where cartilage breakdown and inflammation in the hip joints lead to discomfort. Obesity is another significant contributor to hip pain due to excess weight impacting the hip joints and cartilage. Injuries, such as hip flexor injuries, hamstring injuries, and labrum tears, can also trigger hip problems and pain. Dr. Loren Fishman, a physician and professor at Columbia University, explains that natural aging processes affecting muscle, bone, and tissue can contribute to hip discomfort, along with conditions like bursitis and potential side effects of certain medications.

When experiencing hip pain, relief strategies may include ice application or pharmaceutical interventions like NSAIDs, steroids, or stem cell injections. It’s essential to address hip pain promptly to manage symptoms effectively.

Story medications are often suggested, and osteoarthritis and bursitis respond well to physical therapy, according to Momberger. Fishman mentions that some chiropractors can assist with specific causes of hip pain through adjustments. Surgery may be necessary in cases like labral tears and hip fractures, as noted by Momberger. These interventions can be avoided by taking preventative measures, such as strengthening core muscles and maintaining fitness. Anastasi recommends a regular exercise routine a few times a week for benefits to the hips, pelvis, and abdomen. Improving flexibility is also important, as flexibility tends to decline with age. Anastasi stresses the importance of a stretching and flexibility program, with yoga being particularly helpful. Fishman adds that yoga can improve flexibility, balance, and range of motion, ultimately helping to prevent hip pain and issues.
