High-Level Meeting in Munich Amid Rising Tensions

PARIS (AP) — Senior advisers to President Donald Trump are set to hold discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this week on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference to address the ongoing conflict with Russia in Ukraine. Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, indicated that the White House is finalizing the details for the anticipated talks during the annual international security summit. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Kellogg are among the Trump administration officials traveling to Germany for the conference, potentially participating in crucial discussions with Zelenskyy and his team during the event. Kellogg suggested that a collective meeting could be beneficial for all parties involved. President Trump mentioned the possibility of speaking with Zelenskyy during the week. Additionally, the administration aims to assess the extent of support European nations are willing to offer Kyiv in countering Putin’s actions. Kellogg emphasized the importance of conveying expectations to allies post-conference to present viable options for Trump’s involvement in the peace process. The president hinted at ongoing talks with Russian officials and expressed interest in securing a rare earth materials deal with Ukraine to maintain American economic aid. Vance will lead the delegation to the Munich conference, following his current engagements in Paris.

Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are set to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine during their upcoming meetings. Similar to Trump, Vance has voiced strong opposition to the United States providing billions in military aid to Ukraine during the administration of former President Joe Biden. Michelle L. Price, an Associated Press writer based in Washington, has provided additional reporting on this matter.
