WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he has given instructions to the Justice Department to dismiss all remaining U.S. attorneys appointed during the Biden administration. Trump claimed that the Justice Department had become “politicized like never before.” “We must ‘clean house’ IMMEDIATELY, and restore confidence. America’s Golden Age must have a fair Justice System – THAT BEGINS TODAY,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social. The Justice Department did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
Recently, the White House sent termination notices to multiple U.S. attorneys across the nation who were appointed by former President Joe Biden. The Justice Department announced on Tuesday the departures of U.S. attorneys in Maine, Arizona, Texas, South Carolina, and Montana.
On Monday, several U.S. attorneys appointed by Biden declared that they would be resigning. Additional attorneys left their positions in the government last week. While it is common for U.S. attorneys to step down after a change in administration, typically the incoming administration requests their resignations rather than issuing abrupt termination letters, as mentioned by current and former Justice Department lawyers.
The termination of these U.S. attorneys, who hold the top federal law enforcement roles in their respective districts, represents the latest in a series of shake-ups at the Justice Department since Trump’s recent inauguration. Normally, career officials within the Justice Department remain in their positions from one administration to the next. However, numerous officials in cities such as Washington and New York have either been dismissed or resigned since Trump assumed office.
During his campaign, Trump promised to put an end to what he describes as the “weaponization” of the Justice Department that he believes was used against him during his time out of power.
