Henry Winkler, known for his role as Fonzie in Happy Days, has faced risky situations during his acting career. In an interview with PEOPLE, Winkler reveals some of the dangerous moments he encountered on set, shedding light on why he doesn’t seek thrills like some of his characters. Hazardous History with Henry Winkler premieres on the History Channel on Sunday, June 15 at 10/9c.

Throughout his acting journey, Winkler has had to tackle various challenges, with one of the most perilous being riding a motorcycle for his role as The Fonz. Due to his dyslexia, he struggled to navigate the motorcycle controls and almost caused a serious accident on the Happy Days set.

Winkler also recalls a frightening incident during the filming of the 1977 movie Heroes, co-starring Sally Field and Harrison Ford. While racing a car around a track, he lost control, putting himself and the stuntmen at risk. Despite these close calls, Winkler admits that he is not a thrill-seeker in real life but appreciates exploring risky topics, which inspired his involvement in the Hazardous History series.

Each episode of Hazardous History delves into pastimes, practices, and products once prevalent in American culture but now deemed too dangerous for modern society. Through captivating storytelling, the show revisits the exhilarating and sometimes reckless aspects of American history that are no longer permissible in today’s world.
