Heartbreaking NYC Tragedy: Children Killed by Driver with Suspended License

A devastating incident unfolded in Brooklyn as a mother and her two young daughters lost their lives on Saturday. The driver, operating a vehicle with a suspended license, tragically struck them in a crosswalk, a calamity Mayor Eric Adams likened to a “Shakespearean tragedy.”

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that the fatal collision occurred around 1 p.m. in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn. Tisch condemned the incident, emphasizing that it was an appalling outcome caused by an individual who should not have been behind the wheel.

The driver, Miriam Yarimi, 32, reportedly collided with a Toyota Camry carrying a rideshare driver and another mother with three children before hitting the 35-year-old mother and her three children in the crosswalk. The Audi she was driving then overturned.

Tragically, the 35-year-old mother and her two daughters, aged 6 and 8, were pronounced dead at the scene. The mother’s third child, a 4-year-old boy, was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center in critical condition.

The rideshare driver, aged 62, was hospitalized at Coney Island Hospital and is currently in stable condition. His passengers, a mother and three children, were treated for minor injuries at Kings County Hospital.

Yarimi was rescued from her vehicle by the fire department and taken to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, where she is listed in stable condition.

Commissioner Tisch mentioned that the investigation is ongoing, with factors such as speed and a potential red light violation being scrutinized. A preliminary breath test was conducted to assess for possible intoxication.

Mayor Adams expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a profound loss for both the city of New York and the affected community. He extended his prayers to the grieving families and affirmed that the city stands united in mourning this heartbreaking tragedy.

Adams announced his intention to visit the impacted family at the hospital later in the day.
