Headline Terrifying Recall Alert 63,000 Jeeps at Risk of Losing Power and Parking Function, Drivers

Stellantis, the automotive giant behind Chrysler, is initiating a recall affecting over 63,000 Jeep Cherokees due to a critical defect that jeopardizes safety on the roads. This recall comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed that these vehicles are at risk of losing power and experiencing challenges in parking, heightening the potential for accidents.

The root of the issue lies in an improperly seated input shaft ring within the vehicles’ power transfer unit (PTU). As a consequence, the PTU may sustain damage, leading to the disengagement of the transmission and differential. This malfunction can result in a loss of drive power and park function, significantly amplifying the likelihood of accidents or unintended vehicle rollaways – scenarios fraught with the potential for crashes and injuries.

Drivers may notice warning signs such as a “Service 4WD” message, unusual noises, vibrations, or alterations in driving performance, indicating a problem with the vehicle. However, Stellantis underscores the seriousness of the situation by emphasizing that a sudden loss of motive power could precipitate a crash without any prior indication, underscoring the urgency for prompt action.

At present, there have been no reports linking this defect to any accidents or injuries. The recall pertains to select 2017-2019 Jeep Cherokee models, prompting Chrysler to commit to rectifying the issue. While the exact solution remains unspecified, the company has scheduled the dispatch of notification letters to affected owners on February 13. Concerned drivers can reach out to Chrysler FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403 for further information, citing the recall number 01C. Alternatively, they can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit nhtsa.gov, referencing the recall number 25V011000.

This recall adds to a series of previous safety actions involving Jeep vehicles. In February 2024, a recall encompassing 338,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees was issued due to a ball joint flaw that could compromise driver control. Concurrently, Stellantis recalled 1.2 million vehicles, including the Jeep Compass and Grand Cherokee, over concerns related to a software malfunction.

Further scrutiny on Jeep vehicles ensued in 2024 when U.S. auto safety regulators initiated investigations following complaints that certain Jeep Wagoneer SUVs exhibited issues with power loss, unintended shifting into park, and automatic brake application. Subsequently, in September of the same year, the NHTSA scrutinized reports suggesting that engines in selected Jeep SUVs and pickup trucks could potentially catch fire, even when the ignition is turned off.

As safety remains paramount, the automotive industry continues to grapple with ensuring the reliability and security of vehicles on the road. The proactive measures taken by Stellantis serve as a testament to the company’s commitment to addressing safety concerns promptly and effectively. For affected Jeep Cherokee owners,
