ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — The transfer of Carson Beck to Miami paved the way for Gunner Stockton to assume the role of Georgia’s starting quarterback. Stockton solidified his position as the team’s top choice after stepping in for the injured Beck during the College Football Playoff, following Beck’s season-ending elbow surgery. Despite facing competition from redshirt freshman Ryan Puglisi, Stockton showcased his skills and retained the starting role throughout spring practice, which concluded last Saturday.
Head coach Kirby Smart noted Stockton’s progress during the spring, highlighting his improved confidence and understanding of the offensive scheme. Senior running back Cash Jones praised Stockton’s enhanced decision-making abilities, particularly in his reads. Following a scrimmage at Sanford Stadium, Smart commended Stockton and Puglisi for their athleticism and playmaking abilities.
Stockton’s resilience and toughness were evident to his teammates, with linebacker Raylen Wilson admiring his unwavering determination. Meanwhile, Puglisi demonstrated his arm talent with the second-team offense and displayed potential in leading scoring drives.
Smart emphasized the need for both quarterbacks to continue developing and gaining experience in game situations. While Stockton has established himself as the starter, Puglisi is making strides in his understanding of the playbook and adjusting to the collegiate level.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Stockton and Puglisi are set to benefit from the addition of transfer wide receivers Noah Thomas and Zachariah Branch, providing depth and playmaking options on the outside. Smart expressed confidence in the quarterbacks’ ability to leverage the talent of the new receivers to enhance the team’s offensive capabilities.
