A confidential source disclosed to The Associated Press on Monday that the Arizona Diamondbacks have struck a major deal with slick-fielding shortstop Geraldo Perdomo. The agreement entails a lucrative $45 million contract spanning four years, set to commence in 2026. The source, who chose to remain anonymous, shared that the deal also includes a club option for the 2030 season. Perdomo, who was on the verge of free agency after the 2027 season, will receive $2.55 million this year after entering salary arbitration for the first time.
Having achieved All-Star status in 2023 and playing an instrumental role in guiding the Diamondbacks to the World Series that same year, the 25-year-old faced setbacks in the previous season due to a torn meniscus in his right knee. Despite this, he managed to maintain a batting average of .273 with three home runs across 98 games while showcasing exceptional defensive skills at the pivotal shortstop position. Perdomo’s keen eye at the plate was evident with a notable .344 on-base percentage in the preceding season.
As he embarks on his fifth season, Perdomo has earned admiration within the clubhouse and is beginning to emerge as a prominent leader, particularly following the departure of first baseman Christian Walker, who recently joined the Houston Astros. The Diamondbacks have demonstrated a proactive approach this offseason as they strive to remain competitive against the formidable spending power of division rivals such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants. Noteworthy among their recent moves is the signing of ace pitcher Corbin Burnes to a substantial $210 million, six-year contract in December.
