A recent survey revealed that a majority of respondents from Greenland are in favor of the territory joining the United States. The survey, conducted by Patriot Polling and released on Sunday, found that 57.3 percent of participants support Greenland becoming a part of the U.S. On the other hand, 37.4 percent of respondents expressed disapproval of the potential acquisition, while 5.3 percent remained undecided on the matter.
The idea of Greenland becoming a U.S. territory gained traction after President-elect Trump mentioned the possibility in recent days, referring to owning Greenland as an “absolute necessity.” Although the survey sample only included 416 individuals from Greenland and is the first of its kind, it indicates some level of backing for Trump’s broader international objectives.
Patriot Polling, the organization behind the survey, currently holds a one-star rating out of three in FiveThirtyEight’s poll rankings. This particular survey marked their inaugural attempt at polling beyond the borders of the United States and coincided with a visit to Greenland by Donald Trump Jr., the president-elect’s son.
Trump has persistently expressed his interest in acquiring Greenland, emphasizing its historical and strategic importance to the United States, dating back to the Cold War era. However, many observers have dismissed the feasibility of such a prospect, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen unequivocally stating that Greenland is not for sale, even as discussions around the potential acquisition continue to be raised.
