Governor signs off on secretive multi-million dollar education initiative

In a recent development, Idaho Governor Brad Little has approved a groundbreaking $50 million initiative aimed at expanding private school choice commencing in the upcoming school year. The enactment of H 93 into law signifies a significant milestone in educational policy in the state. This measure encompasses a $5,000 tax credit designed to alleviate families’ educational expenditures, encompassing costs related to private school transportation, tuition, supplies, and tutoring services. Furthermore, the initiative ensures access to up to $7,500 for students with special needs.

Expressing his support for the initiative, Governor Little emphasized the pivotal role it would play in enhancing educational opportunities for students and families across Idaho. In a press release issued by his office, Little remarked, “With the implementation of the $50 million Parental Choice Tax Credit program, Idaho now offers an even wider array of educational options for its citizens. Coupled with the continued success of Idaho’s renowned LAUNCH program, our state has taken a groundbreaking step by providing educational freedom from early childhood through career development.”

Governor Little further asserted, “Idaho stands poised to achieve excellence in both public education and educational freedom. The provision of high-quality education for Idaho’s students remains our foremost objective.” The measure received approval in the Idaho House by a vote of 42-28 earlier in the month, followed by a 20-15 endorsement in the Senate last week before it landed on the Governor’s desk for final approval.

Chris Cargill, President of the Mountain States Policy Center, lauded Governor Little for his decision to sign the bill into law. Cargill expressed gratitude towards the lawmakers for their proactive stance on the issue and commended the Governor for his thoughtful deliberation. “As Governor Little rightly pointed out, Idaho has the capacity to maintain a robust public school system while simultaneously offering additional educational freedom alternatives,” stated Cargill.

Prior to affixing his signature to the bill, Governor Little established a dedicated hotline to solicit feedback from residents regarding their approval or disapproval of the proposed initiative. Recent polling conducted by the Mountain States Policy Center revealed that a significant majority of Idaho voters, totaling 66%, expressed support for the bill, with only 24% in opposition. Notably, even a slim majority of Democrats, amounting to 53%, voiced their support for the measure.
