A Republican congressman has put forward President Donald Trump as a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in securing a ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Trump declared the 12-day conflict between the two nations as “over,” following a somewhat turbulent start to their peace agreement on June 24th. The ceasefire was initiated after Israel launched attacks on Iran’s nuclear program and military installations on June 13th, to which Iran responded with counterattacks. The U.S. also carried out bombings on Iranian nuclear sites on June 21st. Representative Buddy Carter, a six-term Republican from Georgia who is running for the Senate seat in 2026, praised Trump’s efforts in establishing the ceasefire framework that halted hostilities. Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in the past, including by Pakistan for his role in resolving the India-Pakistan crisis, but has yet to win. Other past nominations, including from Ukraine, have been withdrawn. Despite expressing disappointment in not receiving the prize, Trump stated that public recognition is more important to him. The winners of the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced in October.
