Google Maps Update Reveals a Mysterious Name Change

“The names displayed on the Maps app are influenced by your country location, determined by data from your phone’s operating system (such as iOS and Android) which includes your SIM card, network, and locale,” stated Google on Monday to clarify the recent name change. “When using Google Maps on the web, the names are determined by the region you have chosen in your Search settings or by your device’s current location if you have not made a selection.” The Department of the Interior declared that the Gulf of Mexico had been officially renamed the Gulf of America during the first week of President Trump’s administration. Additionally, in compliance with the same executive order, Denali, the highest peak in North America located in Alaska, was renamed Mount McKinley after an assassinated president, marking the second time in history for this change, as confirmed by the department. Denali is the traditional Native Alaskan name for the mountain. As of Tuesday, these updates had not been reflected in the Geographic Names Information System or on Google Maps.
